WEEKLY STOCK MARKET REPORT AND RATING … 5.0 (1-4 bearish, 5 neutral, 6-9 bullish). No change. Inflation appears to be slowly receding but is still significantly above the Fed target of 2.0% and many Fed officials say that rates need to be raised further.
There is a strong case now for a bull market: Inflation is slowing by many measures, so we are at the tail end of Federal Reserve rate increase, corporate earnings and employment are still strong, so any recession will be mild, and better times are just ahead.
As we are going down that path, it would not take much to derail things and a start market reversal: examples include: inflation proves to be more stick than anticipated, possible additional rate hikes by the Fed, corporate earnings begin to slip, deeper recession.
Things will play out soon enough. I added to equity positions recently. If it sounds like I'm cautiously optimistic, I am. If it sounds like I've taken a calculated risk, I have. We will see what happens next.
