INVESTMENT INSIGHTS by Robert Holman, CFA CFP®
STOCK MARKET RATING (THE BIG PICTURE) …
Bullish/Bearish Rating: 6.0 = bullish (1 - 4 is bearish, 5 is neutral, 5 - 9 is bullish).
Market/Economic Condition: Normal market, economic data improving
Outlook: Expecting slow improvement
Monday’s rally following Friday’s selloff was very encouraging for bulls, as almost all lost ground was recovered. Today’s selloff is another attempt by the bears to bring the market down. If the market recovers from this one, it will probably take the remainder of the week to do so. But if negativism prevails, then we may see the start of a correction, some would say long overdue, in excess of 10%.
Expectations are that the CPI report will show continuing inflation, which will hurt consumer spending and slow down the pace of growth in the economy. Also, the Federal Reserve may be pushed into a position to raise interest rates. But I must point out that most rates are (and have been in this cycle) determined by the market anyway.
What do we do with our portfolios in this situation? Raise cash by taking profits. There is nothing wrong with selling 10%, 20% of a position with big profits. Unfortunately, many tech stocks and others like crypto and gold are down significantly from their peak prices. In this instance, selling a string of covered calls may be the best strategy.
Using the cash proceeds from sales to buy into ETFs that profit when the markets go down would round out the protective actions and further limit the downside effects of a negative market.
