INVESTMENT INSIGHTS by Robert Holman, CFA CFP®
STOCK MARKET RATING (THE BIG PICTURE) …
Bullish/Bearish Rating: 7.5 = bullish (1 - 4 is bearish, 5 is neutral, 5 - 9 is bullish).
Market/Economic Condition: Normal market, except for technology
Outlook: Expecting slow improvement
I’ve raised my assessment of market conditions to 7.5, after lowering it last week from 6.5 to 6.0 (out of an of caution re: so many uncertainties) to reflect where we stand now. All the events that could produce a good outcome actually happened last week, so now in my view, we are free and unconstrained to pursue opportunistic profits, at least for a while (an as yet unspecified time period).
Monday’s rally following last week’s bearish selloff was very encouraging for bulls. The market recovered as I thought it might in writing Tuesday about what could happen the rest of last week.
The lack of progress in technology is an attempt by the bears to bring those stocks down. And I must say that in doing this the market is acting abnormally, not logically. It’s a case of overthinking and over-complicating the issues. We are in the fourth industrial/technology revolution in my view. AI is adding so much value to everyday users. I am so thankful for the opportunity to research complex questions and get sound answers.
What do we do with our portfolios in this situation? I cannot give specific investment advice without developing an individual investment strategy for you, based upon your entire financial circumstances. In general, and depending upon your comfort level, pursue getting more fully invested in conservative to aggressive stocks, know your entry points.
Be prepared to reverse course in the short-term if one of last week’s major market developments reverses it’s direction. Otherwise, stay with the stocks in your portfolio, that are performing well, watch the economy, prune poor-performers, and look for opportunities to upgrade your individual holdings with any sales proceeds.
