12:00 TUESDAY – Bi-Weekly Market Report #247 – 10/1/24

by Robert Holman, CFA CFP | www.DefensiveAdvisor.com

STOCK MARKET RATING (THE BIG PICTURE) … 4.0 (1 - 4 is bearish, 5 is neutral, 6 - 9 is bullish). This rating change is generally because risks outweigh opportunities.  This does not mean that I am universally dumping stocks, but I am considering some selective pruning.

It appears Iran launched around 180 projectiles [drones and several types of missiles] against Israel today. The launch was widely telegraphed before it happened, so it was expected and well-defended.  This diverse attack seems to be similar to the first earlier this year, in which no Iranian missiles made it through the U.S.-aided Israeli defense systems.  Due to these and other factors, risks are quite high. Generally, stocks rose off their lows to close at prices mid-way between their highs and lows for the day

Volatility should get better: a) if interest rate cuts continue, and b) as long as nation-state conflicts moderate. The elections are still the big unknown.  I stand ready to make portfolio changes as circumstances change. Staying vigilant in these uncertain times is paramount.
