12:00 TUESDAY – Stock Market Report #209 – 5/23/23

by Robert Holman |

STOCK MARKET RATING … 4.0 (0-4 bearish, 5 neutral, 6-10 bullish). No change.

Congressional debt ceiling talks continue without resolution. The possibility of a resolution by the assumed deadline of the first week of June is difficult to assess. Surely our congressional leaders won’t let us default on our payment obligations, right?

Neil Kashkari said on CNBC yesterday that it’s a 50%/50% probability that there will/won’t be a rate hike in June, but emphasized that the Fed must signal they are done with their tightening cycle, in his view.

The bond market clearly thinks we are about to start a recession, whereas the stock market is signaling that we have already dodged that bullet. The bond market is usually smarter. As usual, actions of the consumer will likely determine the resolution of these two opposing views.

Apple (AAPL $174) received a rare downgrade yesterday – this from Loop Capital with a $180 price target in the next 12 months.
